Project - Wentworth Castle & Stainborough Park, Grade I
Location - South Yorkshire

Client - Wentworth Castle & Stainborough Park Heritage Trust
Scope of work - Design and Implementation of Landscape Restoration

The Gardens and parkland surrounding Wentworth Castle are the unique product of centuries of development, two hundred years of which took place under the ownership of only three individuals. The Grade I registered Park and Garden contain rare examples of 18th century landscape design, including a formal wilderness garden, and one of the earliest examples of a gothic castle folly. The late 19th century Conservatory was featured on the first series of the BBC television programme Restoration, and the gardens also contain three National Collections – Rhododendron species, Magnolia species and Camellia x williamsii.

In 2003, the restoration project was awarded a major grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, with other funding including grants from English Heritage and the Learning and Skills Council. The project includes restoration works to the Castle, Gardens, Home Farm and several monuments. HTLA joined a multi-disciplinary design team in 2004 to lead the design and implementation of the restoration of the remarkable Garden

  Stainborough Park, Sheltering Sheep

and parkland landscape, including the preparation of Conservation Management and Parkland Plans.

In 2008-9, HTLA has been working with the Trust and other consultants on the development of plans for the restoration of the Conservatory and new design for the surrounding landscape, to improve accessibility and support an ambitious plan for enhancing education and interpretation, linking to the wider Gardens and Park. An application for funding for this project, entitled 'The World at Wentworth' was submitted to the HLF in April 2009.
